Network Rail is developing proposals to remodel Manchester Oxford Road Station

Network Rail is currently developing proposals to remodel Manchester Oxford Road Station.

According to Network Rail, its proposals aim to deliver major improvements for passengers by increasing capacity and unlocking a major bottleneck on the national rail network, between Deansgate and Manchester Piccadilly.

The proposals include:

  • Replacing the current five short platforms with three longer platforms. This will allow the station to accommodate longer trains and will help reduce congestion by having fewer conflicting train movements. All platforms will also be resurfaced.
  • Constructing a new and wider station footbridge with lifts, increasing space for passengers and providing step free access to all platforms.
  • Creating new, wider, and longer canopies over all platforms, that are sensitive to the Grade II listing of the existing timber canopies. This will provide passengers waiting for trains with additional comfort and shelter.
  • Signalling upgrades between Deansgate and Oxford Road, improving capacity by allowing trains to run closer together. Overhead line equipment will also be upgraded, and over 900m of new track will be laid.

The proposals are being developed with consideration to unlocking land around Platform 5 in support of future schemes to improve street level access and regenerate the area around Oxford Road Station.

Network Rail is currently hosting a six-week public consultation about the proposals to give everyone interested an opportunity to review the plans and provide feedback to inform further design.

You can access the consultation materials and provide feedback online here until 28 February 2025.

Network rail will also be hosting two public drop-in consultation events at Friends’ Meeting House (6 Mount Street, M2 5NS) on the following days and times:
