Crossing the road should be easier and safer !

Living Streets champions the pedestrian and campaigns for streets that put people first

In their latest news,  Living Steets draws attention to the fact that councils in Wales have now been given new powers to install side-road zebra crossings at junctions. Living Steets points out that recent research has shown that:-

  • after 30 seconds pedestrians are more likely to run out of patience and risk crossing the road before the signals change.
  • 26% of people would walk on their local streets if there were more and better crossings

To improve people's safety when  crossing the road, simple side road zebras are easy to install and give pedestrians clearer priority at side streets; supporting people to walk and wheel more. They also reinforce the Highway Code, which instructs vehicle drivers and riders to give way to pedestrians when turning in and out of sideroads.

Side-road zebras have been successfully trialled in Cardiff, London, Manchester and Warwick – and on 11th March 2026 the Senedd gave local authorities new powers to roll out side road zebras across Welsh communities.

Meanwhile, as of the 2nd April 2026 the DfT has launched its new transport strategy for England:  ‘Better Connected: a strategy for integrated transport’ which sets out a ‘vision for a transport network that works for people and can be relied upon.’ Have a read and see what you think !
