Derbyshire CC's plans for improving safety on the A5004 - Long Hill

A consultation was held in late 2022/early 2023 into proposals for road safety improvements to the A5004 between Buxton and Whaley Bridge along the 7½ mile stretch of the A5004 between Buxton and Whaley Bridge.

Money for the improvements, worth around £2.5 million, has come from the Department for Transport's Safer Roads Fund (SRF) to improve safety along the 50 most dangerous roads in the country.

Some of the proposals are:-

  • a speed management review, and subject to consultation, the installation of average speed cameras along sections of the route with 50mph and 40mph speed limits between Buxton and Whaley Bridge to tackle inappropriate speeding and reduce accidents.
  • better signing, and lining to highlight hazards like bends, footpath crossing points and junctions
  • cycling improvements between Buxton and Whaley Bridge to link the area to the county’s cycle network
